LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – Families around the valley are preparing to prepare some holiday dinners, and Southwest Gas wants to remind customers of ways to remain safe when heating up those appliances.
Natural gas leak detection:
- Smell of a distinct, sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs.
- Hear a hissing or roaring coming from the ground, piping, or natural gas appliance.
- See dirt or water blowing into the air; standing water that is continuously bubbling.
If a natural gas leak is suspected:
- Leave the area immediately and call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020.
- Do not smoke or use matches or lighters.
- Do not turn any electric switches, appliances, thermostats, etc., on or off.
- Do not start or stop an engine or use an automated garage door.
Other tips include:
- Keep your family safe by having only licensed technicians install and repair natural gas appliances, as well as perform annual maintenance and checkups.
- When cooking, the flame should not extend beyond the bottom of the pot.
- Stovetop flames should be steady and blue in color. Orange flames indicate burners that need to be cleaned by a licensed technician.
- Never use the kitchen oven as a space heater or use appliances for anything other than for what they were designed.
- Keep a minimum of three feet away from water heaters and furnaces. Set the water heater thermostat at or below the manufacturer’s recommended temperature to prevent scalding.
- When using a natural gas fireplace, ensure the chimney damper is open.
The most prevalent worry, according to Southwest Gas, is gas leaks, although specialists are ready to assist with a range of other issues, including appliance installation and testing.
