A Clark County School District (CCSD) junior high school student has developed life-altering seizures due to the stress of enduring relentless bullying for over a year, her mother claims. The mother, Danielle Smith, alleges that her daughter’s pleas for help were largely ignored by the school and district, leading to the devastating medical condition.
Smith recounts how the bullying began with a physical attack in choir class, where her daughter was punched in the head multiple times. The torment continued with a male student taking over the harassment. Despite Smith’s attempts to address the issue with the school principal and the district, she claims her concerns were dismissed.
In a desperate attempt to protect her daughter, Smith requested a transfer to online learning in March, but was told it was too late in the school year. Tragically, days later, her daughter experienced her first seizure. A doctor’s note attributed the seizures to non-epileptic events, potentially triggered by extreme stress and anxiety.
Dr. Christina Madison, a pediatrician with experience working with children, explains that bullying can indeed have severe physical and emotional consequences. She notes that psychogenic seizures, like the ones experienced by Smith’s daughter, can result from heightened stress and anxiety levels.
Dr. Madison emphasizes the crucial role parents play in protecting their children from the harmful effects of bullying. She advises parents to be vigilant for signs of withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, and complaints of stomachaches, which can be early indicators of emotional distress.
When contacted for comment, CCSD cited federal law preventing them from disclosing information on individual student matters. However, the district affirmed its commitment to investigating all bullying allegations thoroughly. They encourage parents and students to report bullying incidents through SafeVoice, an anonymous reporting platform.
This heart-wrenching case highlights the urgent need for schools and districts to address bullying effectively and prioritize the well-being of their students. It serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that bullying can have on a child’s life, extending far beyond emotional distress to include potentially life-altering physical ailments.
