LAS VEGAS – On Monday night, a tragic event occurred in the East Valley, resulting in the death of a young person and the injury of a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer.
The incident, which took place at 6:19 p.m. at the intersection of S. Boulder Highway and E. Flamingo Road.
According to information provided by the Las Vegas police, evidence from the scene, witness accounts, and surveillance footage revealed a sequence of events leading to the collision. A marked LVMPD Patrol Vehicle was stationary, facing southbound on Boulder Highway, waiting for a red traffic signal in the left travel lane of three (T1). As the signal switched to green, the patrol vehicle cautiously entered the intersection, heading southbound.
Tragically, a Buick LeSabre operated by an unidentified juvenile was traveling westbound on Flamingo Road, situated east of Boulder Highway, within the right travel lane of two (T2). Ignoring the red traffic signal, the driver of the Buick proceeded into the intersection, leading to a devastating collision between the front of the Buick and the front left of the patrol vehicle.
The young driver of the Buick, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rushed to Sunrise Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the valiant efforts of medical staff, the individual ultimately succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Meanwhile, the officer behind the wheel of the LVMPD patrol vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to UMC Trauma for medical attention.
Authorities have indicated that the Clark County Coroner’s office will eventually release the identity of the juvenile, as well as provide insight into the cause and manner of their unfortunate passing.
This tragic incident marked the 95th traffic-related fatality within LVMPD’s jurisdiction for the year 2023. In response, the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol’s Collision Investigation Section has taken up the primary investigative responsibility for this sorrowful occurrence as the community grapples with the loss.
