LAS VEGAS – The City of Las Vegas is investigating a possible copper wire theft in connection with a street light outage that led to a fatal pedestrian accident on Monday.
A 9-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by an RTC bus while crossing the street outside of a crosswalk in an unlit area. Local residents have called for action from the city, saying that the street lights have been out for weeks.
On Wednesday, the city confirmed that copper wire had been stolen from street lights in the area. City crews have since made repairs and the street lights are now fully functional.
The city is still investigating the accident and has not yet released any further information. However, the possible copper wire theft raises concerns about safety and security in the area.
Copper wire theft is a growing problem in many cities, as criminals target the valuable metal for scrap. The theft of copper wire can lead to outages and safety hazards, as in this case.
The city is taking steps to address the problem, including installing security cameras at street light poles and increasing police patrols in areas where copper wire theft is common. However, more needs to be done to prevent these crimes from happening in the first place.
In the meantime, residents are urged to be cautious when crossing the street at night, especially in areas where street lights are out. If you see a street light that is out, please report it to the city immediately.
