LAS VEGAS, NV – Facing persistent staffing challenges, the Clark County School District (CCSD) is making it easier to hire retired teachers to fill critical vacancies. On Thursday, School Board trustees voted unanimously to offer open positions to qualified retirees, provided the district can demonstrate it has been unable to recruit non-retired candidates.
This move comes as the district designates various positions as “critical labor shortage areas” through June 30, 2024. CCSD is particularly short-staffed in areas including elementary and high school teaching (particularly P.E., business, math, science, and English), special education, bus drivers, and substitute teachers.
In a statement, district officials cited the nationwide teacher shortage and the need for “creative recruitment strategies”. The critical labor shortage waiver allows for expedited hiring of retired educators, eliminating delays while still maintaining background checks.
This isn’t the first time CCSD has used this strategy. Similar waivers were utilized in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 to address persistent vacancies.
To hire retirees, Nevada law requires the district to provide a written report demonstrating extensive but unsuccessful efforts to fill positions with non-retired candidates. The report must detail recruitment history, length of vacancy, and other factors.
