Death Valley National Park’s Route to Beatty Could Reopen on Nov. 4, a Park Spokesman Said Monday

LAS VEGAS – A National Park official indicated Monday that the road connecting Beatty to Death Valley National Park could reopen Nov. 4.

Daylight Pass Road and the Beatty Cutoff have been closed since Aug. 5, the wettest day in Death Valley history. Initial estimates of eight months for repairs didn’t include interim repairs to reopen the road sooner. Early in September, officials indicated parts of the road would be repaired using gravel.
Death Valley National Park spokeswoman Abby Wines said the road should be open Nov. 4, before the Death Valley 49ers Annual Encampment. Sunday before the campsite opens is vendor setup and planning.

Floods and storms in August damaged CA-190, the park’s major route, and closed it. Between Panamint Valley Road and town Pass, 400 feet of pavement was destroyed. Emigrant Canyon Road now leads to CA-190.

Wines claimed Caltrans’ latest update predicted CA-190 will reopen by mid-November.

Badwater Road remains damaged. 3 feet of debris covered road sections. Another roadside washed away.

Wines said the 49ers will camp regardless of road improvements.

The event includes a 4-wheel-drive trip to Titus Canyon, southwest of Beatty.

Beatty is a small town on U.S. 95 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Death Valley visitors from Las Vegas can stay at the Stagecoach casino and many motels.
