LAS VEGAS – Centennial High School players took the field Monday to honor the life of a teen who died during a sporting event.

The flag football game between Centennial and Desert Oasis high schools on Monday was the first since 16-year-old Ashari Hughes died after suffering a “medical issue” during the game on Jan. 5.

Before the game, a special ceremony was held in which both of Hughes’ old clubs and players from the Las Vegas Raiders wore her jersey. Twayne Hughes, Hughes’ mother, said the event symbolizes her daughter’s optimism.

“It means a lot to us to have her name carried on in this way,” Twayne remarked.

Hughes’ coach at Centennial High School, Stan Standifer, said the adolescent greatly impacted both student bodies.

“The outpouring of affection that we have received since her death has been incredible,” Standifer said.

Hughes died on January 5th. The kid died as a result of “anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left coronary sinus of Valsalva,” according to the Clark County Coroner.

Former Raiders defensive end Roy Hart presented each team with a football bearing the phrase, “Do it for Ashari.”
