Nevada Lawmakers Push for Stricter E-Bike and E-Scooter Regulations Amid Rising School Zone Incidents

In response to a surge in reckless e-bike and e-scooter use, particularly in school zones, Nevada legislators are advocating for stricter regulations to ensure public safety. Assembly Bill 168, introduced by State Representative Heather Goulding, aims to hold riders of bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters to the same standards as motor vehicle operators.

Lieutenant Michael Campbell of the Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD) has expressed concern over the increasing number of incidents involving these electric devices. He reports that some models can reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour, posing significant risks in areas designated for children’s safety. “The biggest problem is we’re seeing them drive very recklessly in our school zones around our kids, and it’s causing injuries,” Campbell stated.

During the current school year, 84 students have been struck by vehicles, with six of these incidents involving e-bikes or e-scooters. This alarming trend underscores the necessity for legislative action. Assembly Bill 168 seeks to address this issue by mandating that all riders adhere to the same responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles, including obeying traffic signals and signs.

While some young riders assert their ability to operate these devices safely, law enforcement emphasizes that many high-speed e-bikes and e-scooters are not suitable for public roadways. Lieutenant Campbell points out that, due to the current lack of specific laws, these devices could be classified as motorcycles when used on streets, necessitating proper licensing, insurance, and registration. Parents and guardians should be aware that they can be held liable for their children’s illegal use of such devices, and the e-bikes or e-scooters may be confiscated.

As the legislative process progresses, the focus remains on enhancing public safety and reducing accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters, especially in vulnerable areas like school zones.
