Nevada Roads Are Among the Most Dangerous in the United States

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Traffic deaths are rising in the U.S. From January to June 2022, 20,175 persons died in car accidents, the most since 2006. Here’s the deadliest year for car accidents since seat belts were required.

Americans are spending more time on the road, increasing traffic fatalities. First-half U.S. drivers traveled 43.2 billion more miles than the previous year.

Recent traffic deaths continue a worrying long-term trend. From mid-2020 to early 2022, traffic deaths soared for seven quarters. A survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety revealed that the rise is partly due to more unsafe driving, such as speeding, distracted driving, and drunk driving.

Some states had high traffic fatality rates this year. Nevada had 194 road fatalities in the first half of 2022, the 18th-fewest among states.

Nevada has the 15th highest traffic mortality rate after normalizing for vehicle miles traveled, with 1.39 deaths per 100 million miles. In the first half of 2018, there were 1.27 deaths per 100 million miles.
