Tiny Homes for Seniors Proposed

Tiny Homes for Seniors Proposed

LAS VEGAS – The City of Las Vegas is reviewing a plan to include tiny homes in an affordable housing complex for low-income residents and the elderly.

At Rome and Decatur Road, 276 units are proposed. Ovation Development proposes two- to four-story apartment structures and several dozen 400-square-foot tiny dwellings.

Tiny homes are popular among tenants, homeowners, and developers seeking economical solutions amid growing building costs, rent, and housing prices.

According to the Nevada Housing Coalition, the state lacks 85,000 apartments for those with extremely low incomes; 25,000 of them are seniors.

Ovation Development claimed the concept was intended for all ages, but after people voiced concerns over crowding, traffic, and crime, they adjusted it to a prospective 55+ community and removed three-bedroom apartment possibilities.

People who lived here would have been starting teachers, police officers, and firemen, a representative told the Planning committee on September 13.

On Oct. 19, the City Council will consider the plan.
