A tragic reminder of life’s unpredictability struck over the weekend at Diamond Peak Ski Resort, where 7-year-old Adelyn Grimes of Reno was killed after being struck by a falling boulder. The incident, described as a “non-skiing accident,” occurred just before 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

According to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, Adelyn suffered fatal blunt force injuries to her neck and chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have ruled the death an accident, with circumstances surrounding the boulder’s fall still under active investigation.

Ski patrol and emergency responders from the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office acted quickly, but were unable to save the child.

Adelyn was a member of the Sugar Bowl race team, a community now grieving alongside her family. In a statement, Diamond Peak Resort extended heartfelt condolences to her loved ones and to all affected in the Lake Tahoe ski racing community. Counseling support is being provided to resort staff.

This heartbreaking event reminds us that even in leisure and recreation, safety—and awareness of our environment—remains critical. Whether on the slopes or in daily life, we are called to cherish our children, protect them, and remain ever vigilant.

In a time when society focuses so much energy on political division and digital outrage, may this loss prompt reflection on the values that truly matter: family, faith, and personal accountability.
