THURSDAY EVENING UPDATE
The Washoe County School District announced Thursday that Dilworth Middle School will be closed on Friday owing to a high number of teacher absences.
The punishment comes just one day after a confrontation at the school resulted in a lockdown. A staff member was hurt, according to school Principal Joel Peixoto.
On Thursday night, the school district provided no additional details on the nature of the injuries.
Joe Rodriguez, a School Board Trustee, expressed regret on Facebook over the ongoing violence against school personnel. Rodriguez stated that he intended to resolve it as quickly as possible.
“Our community must stand with our frontline employees and understand that any type of violence against personnel will not be tolerated!” wrote Rodriguez. “While I want every child to know they are safe in our schools, our staff needs to feel the same degree of assurance.
The school system anticipates classes to resume as normal on Monday.
The following is the message delivered to parents:
Families of Dilworth,
Joel Peixoto, your principal, has sent you an important communication.
Classes will be canceled tomorrow, Friday, December 16, due to an exceptionally high number of staff absences.
There will be no activities or services provided on the school grounds.
We anticipate that classes will resume on Monday, December 19, and will provide you with additional information on Sunday afternoon.
We understand how inconvenient and disruptive this is for our children and families. We deeply regret this.
