Donations are needed for student food insecurity at the University of Nevada

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The University of Nevada is requesting $25,000 from the community to assist students in need.

According to a 2022 Civic Engagement survey performed by the Center for Student Engagement, 28% of undergraduate students at the University of Nevada, Reno experienced food poverty. Since the last poll in 2020, reported need has grown by 3%. Pack Provisions, the University’s on-campus food pantry, now serves an average of 258 guests each day.

The University and Pack Provisions are seeking for community help to fund $25,000 to benefit University students in need from #GivingTuesday, Nov. 29, until the end of the calendar year. Donations of any size can assist a struggling youngster in thriving physically, psychologically, and intellectually.

“Food insecurity in college is associated with many unfavorable outcomes including poor health, difficulty concentrating and even an increased dropout rate,” Sophie Morton, student director of Pack Provisions, said. “Supporting students to help meet their basic needs is pertinent in their success, ensuring they remain focused on finishing their degrees without the worry of where their next meal will come from.”

Pack Provisions, a program given by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada and maintained by the Center for Student Engagement, provides University community members with perishable and nonperishable meals, grocery dollars, school supplies, hygiene goods, and more. During the 2021-2022 academic year, the pantry received over 4,500 visitors and distributed over 23,000 pounds of food to students.

“It was so nice to have that place where you can come, and it was so easy,” one Pack Provisions student visitor said. “I remember carrying two whole bags with me, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have groceries plus I have the daily use products like a toothbrush, hygiene products, everything.’”

Pack Provisions exists thanks to the generosity of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Catholic Charities, the Desert Farming Initiative, and contributors.
