NEVADA – The current flooding incident in Douglas County has prompted the Board of County Commissioners to declare a local state of emergency on Friday, March 10, 2023. The decision was made due to the significant precipitation that has led to saturated soil, and with more rain and snowfall predicted, the County is concerned about the possibility of localized flooding.
Chairman Mark Gardner expressed support for the declaration, stating that it will allow the County to use its available resources to the fullest extent and secure additional resources to help community members prepare and respond to the winter storm.
The declaration has been submitted to the State of Nevada, which will enable regional partners to expedite the delivery of resources, request additional resources more effectively, speed up recovery efforts, and meet the needs of the community during this time of crisis.
Furthermore, an emergency operations center has been activated by the County to respond more effectively to needs across the region. To report any non-emergency-related flood concerns, residents can call 775-783-6038.
Douglas County officials urge residents to prioritize their safety during winter storms. They advise avoiding unnecessary travel and having emergency plans in place in case of power outages, flooding, and dangerous snow conditions.
