RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Radon Education Program is giving away free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans in January and February in honor of National Radon Action Month.
These test kits enable homeowners to determine whether their properties contain excessive concentrations of the cancer-causing gas and to take precautions if necessary. Radon test kits are offered statewide at free presentations, Extension offices, and partner venues.
Colorless, odorless, and tasteless radon is a radioactive gas that exists in nature. Since it is derived from the earth, it can gather in residences and increase the risk of lung cancer. Lung cancer caused by radon, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, kills 21,000 Americans annually, more than secondhand smoking, drunk driving, and home fires combined.
One in four houses in Nevada that have been tested for radon have levels that are at or above the EPA action threshold. Experts estimate that the danger of acquiring lung cancer from living in a home with radon levels at the action level is comparable to the risk caused by smoking roughly half a pack of cigarettes each day.
Lung cancer caused by radon can be prevented. Winter is the best season to test a home for radon since a simple three-day test can identify radon issues. Radon issues can be resolved if they are discovered. It is advised to conduct radon risk assessments on residences every two years.
Extension urges anyone who haven’t gotten a test in the last two years to get one this month for free. While some sites have more erratic hours, certain Extension and partner offices have set hours. Before picking up a test kit, UNR authorities advise phoning to confirm office hours.
Here are the places for Radon test kits.
In addition, there will be two free presentations scheduled on the radon risk where free kits will be available:
- In Reno on Jan. 25, 5:30 p.m., at the Northwest Reno Library, 2325 Robb Drive
- In Minden on Feb. 8, 5:30 p.m., at the Genoa Town Hall, 2287 Main St.
Visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website or contact the Radon Hotline at 775-336-0252 for further details.
A project of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, the Nevada Radon Education Program is supported by EPA Grant K1-98T37923. In Nevada, 33,900 residences have been evaluated since the program’s start in 2007.
