Governor Lombardo Raises Concerns Over Proposed Changes to Reno Postal Center

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has voiced his apprehension regarding the proposed alterations at the Reno processing and distribution center in a recent letter addressed to Postmaster Louis DeJoy of the United States Postal Service (USPS). Lombardo expressed his unease and urged DeJoy to seriously consider the concerns raised by constituents, local authorities, and Nevada state agencies.

Approximately one month ago, the USPS unveiled a proposal outlining the potential downsizing of the main post office on Vassar Street to a local processing center. This move would necessitate routing all mail through Sacramento for processing, rather than handling it locally. The proposed change has sparked significant apprehension and opposition among various stakeholders.

Key among the opponents of the proposal are prominent state agencies such as the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Both agencies heavily rely on USPS services to reach constituents across the state. Governor Lombardo underscored the critical role of DHHS programs in serving vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Any disruption to mail operations could lead to substantial setbacks in delivering essential services.

In his letter, Governor Lombardo respectfully urged the USPS to carefully consider the concerns the state of Nevada raised regarding the proposed downsizing of the Reno processing and distribution center. The sentiment echoed by Lombardo has garnered support from various elected officials, including Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, the entire Washoe County Commission, both U.S. senators, and Congressman Mark Amodei.

The collective opposition highlights the widespread concern over the potential ramifications of the proposed changes and emphasizes the importance of maintaining efficient and reliable postal services in the region. As discussions continue, stakeholders remain hopeful that their concerns will be given due consideration by the USPS in shaping any decisions regarding the Reno P&DC proposal.
