NEVADA – In a shooting two years ago at a trailer park in northeast Nevada, a man from Elko killed a man and badly hurt a woman. The man was sentenced to four to seventeen years in prison.
The Elko Daily Free Press said that 32-year-old Austin William Himmelman apologized in court before Fourth District Court Judge Mason Simons gave him his sentence Wednesday for pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter and battery with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily harm.
Himmelman was also told to pay the funeral costs of Matthew Allen Baze, 32, of Elko’s mother, Jeannette Theel, which came to more than $10,000.
On January 7, 2021, Baze was shot three times, including once in the head. Three days later, he died in a Utah hospital.
According to court documents cited by the Daily Free Press, the woman who was hurt is still getting better from injuries to her abdomen.
Theel told Himmelman, “I forgive you, Austin, because I want to set a good example as a mother for myself and my child.”
Himmelman said that the shooting was “a horrible, tragic accident” and that he was “not a cold-hearted monster.”
He said, “If I could take it back, I would.” “I’m sorry.”
Authorities said that the shooting happened because of a fight over a car that was at Baze’s house.
Five days later, Himmelman was picked up in Sparks. The Daily Free Press said that he had been convicted of drug crimes and running away from the law in the past. He was let out on bail, but he was arrested again in June 2021 for not showing up to court on the gun charge.
