RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – A mountain lion attacked a 14-year-old girl as she was walking her dog in south Reno.
The incident occurred on Terry Way in the foothills of south Reno on November 10, according to Nevada Department of Wildlife officials.
Officials with the Department of Wildlife said the circumstances of the incident, including why it attacked, are unknown, but both the girl and the dog are safe. The girl did, however, appear to have scratch wounds.
The lion was tracked down and killed by APHIS Wildlife Services.
According to NDOW, there have been more sightings of mountain lions in the area since the attack, and they advise people to take the following precautions:
- Get rid of anything that might attract deer or other predatory animals. Birdseed, pet food, garbage or compost, water features, fallen fruit, overgrown bushes, woodpiles, decks, or other structures that might give cover or a place to den can all be included.
- Make an attempt to keep deer out of your yard; deer are a favorite food source for mountain lions, so if they’re there, a lion could be too.
- Install lion-scare devices, such as motion-activated lights and/or sprinklers, to keep the lions at bay.
When youngsters are playing outside, keep a close eye on them. - Make certain that youngsters are not outside before night and are not outside before sunrise. Discuss lions with your children and teach them what to do if they come into contact with one.
