Nevada Farmer Rodney Mehring Gave Three Square Food Bank 600 Pounds of Locally Produced Tomatoes
NEVADA – Rodney Mehring delivered 600 pounds of locally grown tomatoes to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas last week.
Blue Lizard Farm in Lincoln County provided produce to food insecure families in Las Vegas owing to a bill passed last year that uses state monies to buy Nevada-grown food for local food banks.
Home Feeds Nevada allows food banks to order and distribute locally sourced produce. First Home Feeds Nevada order was tomatoes.
“The Home Feeds Nevada program is giving my farm some much-needed stability,” stated Mehring of Blue Lizard Farms. “We’re proud to support Home Feed Nevada. I started farming to feed my children, and now that they’re grown, I can feed other Nevada families.
Nevada’s small-scale farmers lost a lot of sales during the outbreak. According to research by the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri, agricultural income will fall by $21.9 billion in 2021.
The farm grows a variety of veggies near Caliente, Nevada from March through November.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture said the program will feed needy populations and boost agriculture and rural economies.
NDA director Jennifer Ott remarked, “We work every day to ensure every Nevadan has food on their plate.” This first Home Feeds Nevada delivery symbolizes a big achievement in our fight for food security and support for Nevada’s food and agriculture sectors.
The American Rescue Plan Act gave Nevada $2 million to buy Nevada-grown, produced, and processed foods for Three Square Food Bank and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
