NEVADA – The Nevada state Senate has approved a bill aimed at strengthening protections for out-of-state abortion patients and in-state providers from prosecution and penalties.
The move is part of the state’s Democratic leadership’s efforts to make Nevada a safe haven for abortion patients. Governor Joe Lombardo, who describes himself as pro-life, could sign the bill as written, according to his spokesperson.
The bill codifies an executive order from former Governor Steve Sisolak last year, barring state agencies from assisting other states in investigations that could lead to the prosecution of abortion patients and medical boards.
The bill now heads to the state Assembly, where Democrats hold a supermajority.
Nevada Democrats have vowed to preserve abortion access, as neighboring states including Utah and Idaho restrict it.
