NEVADA – Newly released body camera footage depicts the stressful minutes leading up to an officer-involved shooting in Sparks in late August.
Police arrived at an apartment on the 1600 block of Merchant Street on August 22 on a report of a man with a knife who had recently stabbed his teenage kid and was trying to harm his divorced wife.
The wife told dispatchers from her neighbor’s apartment that she had just returned from vacation and her husband, who had not lived with her for three years, was trying to assault her with a knife.
Body camera footage shows officers approaching a residence with distant yelling. Francisco Pena, 59, was shouting with his son at the doorway when police came. Officers requested Pena to drop the knife before shooting him.
Sparks police say two officers shot Pena in the chest and stomach out of fear for their lives. Before medics came, officers began treating Pena. Authorities said Pena died at a hospital.
Detectives learned Pena carried a loaded semi-automatic gun to his wife’s apartment during the investigation.
The regional officer-involved shooting protocol was enacted, therefore Reno will handle the inquiry.
