NEVADA – During the FIRST Nevada Lego League Challenge, a team of five students from Kate Smith Elementary School in Sparks won the Champions Award and will advance to the Northern Nevada Championship. The PAWSitive Robotics Team, representing the Kate Smith Cougars, designed a robot that competed in a number of Lego tasks and created a unique community project that they submitted to the panel of judges to earn first place in the tournament. They will compete in the title tournament early next year.

Fifth-graders Kassandra Gomez Garcia, Josmary Cortes Lupercio, Alexa Garcia Romano, Fatima Gomez Garcia, and Mercedes Aquino Estrada make up the team. Marie Scilacci, Jillian Welch, and Megan Tilton are the team’s faculty advisors.

“We are all extremely proud of our PAWSitive Robotics Team at Kate Smith Elementary School for their hard work and desire to do their absolute best,” stated Principal Amanda Stulock. “They’ve worked tirelessly as a team to polish their concept, and we can’t wait for the next phase of competition.”
FIRST Lego League engages students ages 4-14 to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) via creative, hands-on learning projects. PAWSitive Robotics Team competed against 21 teams with members ranging in age from 9 to 14 years old in the most recent event in Reno. PAWSitive Robotics will compete in the Northern Nevada Championship in Carson City on February 4th.
