RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The City of Reno’s Maintenance and Operations personnel have worked more than 800 hours to remove over 43,000 miles of highways since New Year’s Eve due to recent storms that have affected them with snow and ice.
According to Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran, the impact of the “heavy sierra cement” has caused a doubling of emergency calls.
“That heavy sierra cement which piles up becomes ice very quickly and the problem there, is that it begins to accumulate, so its not just a sheet of ice, but it can become kind of like speed bumps, it could become berms, other obstacles on the road from the frozen snow/ice that can become travel difficulties,” he said.
If at all feasible, officials advise drivers to remain off the roads; however, if this is not an option, they should slow down and maintain a safe distance from the automobile in front.
“If you can or are able, make sure that your driveway, sidewalks, and hydrants in your region are clean of snow,” advises RFD Chief Cochran. “Snow that melts and refreezes can present risks.”
