NEVADA – In a move that will benefit over 5,000 students, the Rotary Club of Sparks has announced that they will donate calculators to every third grader in Washoe County. From May 1, members of the club will visit local elementary schools to distribute the devices, which are specially selected to meet the needs of the students.
Traditionally, the club has delivered dictionaries to third graders in the area for almost two decades. This year, however, the club decided to provide calculators instead. According to Sparks Club Secretary Mike Hix, “math skills are extremely important for our learning,” and the calculators will be more valuable to the students.
The decision to focus on third graders was based on the fact that this is the age when children begin to understand the functions of a calculator and the importance of numbers. Hix believes that having their own calculator will give them the “math power” to make simple and complex calculations needed to succeed in the business world when they grow up, and will also be a useful tool for educators when giving homework.
The Rotary Club of Sparks plans to distribute the calculators within the next two to three weeks. This act of generosity will undoubtedly benefit the young students and provide them with a valuable resource to enhance their mathematical skills.
