NEVADA – The Sierra is under a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday to Sunday. Mountain travel is not advised for the second half of the weekend due to heavy snow.
Saturday night, Sunday morning, and Sunday afternoon will bring rain to the valley bottom. Slick hills but little impact on the valley. Windy Friday through Sunday.
Warmer storm with weak atmospheric river signal. Unlike earlier in the year, ocean moisture will be scarce. The valley will get little snow, but the mountains will get one to two feet. Sierra cement snow, not fluffy. Most of the valley will see a rain/snow mix. Most Truckee Meadows regions will only get rain or slush Sunday morning because the snow level will surpass 5000′. On Sunday, an unstable upper level low behind the front may bring Sierra and valley showers. Mountain snowfall may be intense but intermittent. Valley forecasts are tougher. Sunday: mix, rain, or snow? If it rains severely, it may snow. Cold air will move in behind the front, so we’ll have to watch it closely. Sunday’s showers may fall as snow, but I think there’s a better chance for rain or a mix. Watch careful for frozen puddles on Monday. Sunday valley showers will be sporadic. No flop.
On Friday, a weak system will move through the highlands, raising wind speeds but not snowfall. Tahoe receives a Lake Wind Advisory. 10pm Thursday to 7pm Friday. On Friday, Tahoe could see 40mph winds and ridgetops 100mph. Thus, Saturday’s windy. Saturday night’s wind will obscure the snow. Safe and warm.
