RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The Women and Children’s Center of the Sierra (WACCS) is presenting their “Adopt-a-Family” Christmas program for the ninth year in a row. This year, 277 families registered for the program, a more than 20% increase over previous year. Out of the 277 families on the list, 130 are still available for adoption.
According to organizers, this is an opportunity to provide joy to children who don’t usually have anything to look forward to over the holidays.
”Living in poverty is a tough row to hoe, it means going without, it means not having things that the other kids have, it means worrying before the holidays, it means asking if Santa going to find me this year because he didn’t find me last year,” said Pam Russell, Executive Director at WACCS.
The United States According to the census, 10% of the population in Washoe County is at or below the federal poverty line. WACCS assists low-income women and families; many are working families whose money is used to meet basic necessities and might benefit from some assistance in making the holidays special for their children.
Toys and clothing for children of all ages, as well as kitchenware and gift cards for parents, are on the Christmas wish list.
To adopt a family, contact the WACCS headquarters at (775) 825-7395 Monday through Friday. through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or every Friday at 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You may also contact WACCS by email at admin@waccs.org.
