NEVADA – The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada announced a $10,000 donation from the NV Energy Foundation to help support the non-ongoing profit’s winter storm response activities. The donation will only be used in Northern and Rural Nevada.
“As we all know, the impact of the New Year’s Day blizzard was catastrophic in certain areas in our area,” said Mary Powell, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “This donation will assist us in meeting the needs of our communities when harsh winter weather leaves individuals in need of a variety of services, including food, housing, and other necessities.”
Powell noted that Red Cross Disaster Action Team officials and volunteers were on hand to assist the Washoe County “warming center” that opened on New Year’s Day. “Many residents were without heat or electricity and needed a safe location to warm up and charge electronic gadgets,” she explained. “The Red Cross offered refuge as well as hot coffee, tea, water, and food. And NV Energy’s generosity enables us to continue this critical job.”
The foundation annually provides more than $5 million to hundreds of non-profit groups across the state to address critical community needs.
“When we noticed a need in our community, we partnered with the American Red Cross to help,” said Tony Sanchez, NV Energy Executive Vice President, Business Development and External Relations and NV Energy Foundation Board Director. “We are honored to work alongside the Red Cross to meet the immediate needs of Nevadans affected by this historic disaster.”
When disaster strikes, Red Cross volunteers and staff are on the ground, whether it’s a big winter storm that forces a community to evacuate or a home fire that leaves a family without a place to stay. “We provide safe accommodation, nutritious food, comfort, care, and support during an ongoing crisis,” Powell explained. “We also provide educational resources to help residents prepare for emergencies.”
