The Great Nevada Shakeout Earthquake Drill Is Set for Thursday
NEVADA – Nevadans are urged to join drop, cover, and hold on Thursday during the Great Nevada ShakeOut. The event is on Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m.
Nevada is one of the most earthquake-prone states in the US. According to the Southern California Earthquake Center, Nevada has seen 76 “possibly damaging” earthquakes since the 1850s.
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake in July 2021 struck southwest of Smith Valley and evacuated Reno City Hall.
Smaller quakes also occur. During five months in 2008, residents west of Reno near Mogul strapped down TVs and removed heavy objects from walls.
Local safety experts say being prepared can keep you safe during an unexpected rumbling. This week’s drill includes the University Police Department.
This week’s ShakeOut had 590,000 participants.
The ShakeOut website includes drill manuals and planning documents for schools, government agencies, hospitals, and workplaces.
Earthquake safety tips:
Drop on the ground, cover under a sturdy desk or table, or crawl against an interior wall to protect your head. Don’t leave till it’s safe.
If you’re outdoors, drop, cover, and hang on away from buildings, trees, and electricity lines.
If you’re driving, stop in a safe place and buckle up. Once the shaking stops, avoid damaged bridges and ramps.
They recommend downloading a public safety app in case of an earthquake.
