The Interior Department Will Provide Nevada $5.9 Million to Boost Wildfire Resilience
NEVADA – Nevada will get more than $5.9 million from the Department of the Interior to make the state more resilient to wildfires, the agency announced on Wednesday.
More than 14,000 acres of property across the state will be the recipient of funds for fuel management initiatives according to President Biden’s Infrastructure Law.
Overseas, $103 million has been allotted to assist reduce the potential for fires.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife will get funding via the Bureau of Land Management. To lessen the risk of wildfires, the Department of Animal inked a $918,000 contract with the state to restore wildlife habitat.
The agreement and the preliminary money represent the first stage of a potential $10 million, five-year endeavor.
According to Deputy Secretary Tommy Beaudreau, “as climate change generates harsher heat waves, more volatile weather, and record drought conditions, we are witnessing wildfire seasons evolve into wildfire years,” endangering people’s homes, businesses, animals, and the ecosystem. By passing President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Congress and the President are “investing in Nevada communities, expanding wildfire resiliency work across the country, enhancing resources for the heroic firefighting personnel, and decreasing the danger of wildfire.”
There will be a $1.5 billion investment over the next five years on fire science, fuels management, post-fire restoration, and preparedness as part of the Infrastructure Law.
