RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The Foster Grandparent Program benefits many children in our northern Nevada communities, making seniors a vital resource.
Foster grandparents are persons over the age of 55 who like spending time with children. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” volunteer in schools, mentoring and instructing students, and they become a part of the classroom and school culture.
Volunteers who satisfy income requirements will receive a stipend of $3.15 per hour, as well as sick and vacation time and paid holidays. Everyone will get a pre-service orientation, training, and travel reimbursement.
Seniors are only expected to offer five hours per week, but some volunteers give up to 40 hours every week.
This program allows elders to keep intellectually and physically active by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with our community’s kids, while children benefit significantly from time spent with them.
Wayne Gooch, a foster grandparent, stated,
This program literally saved my life. It gave me a new sense of purpose.
