Hilary and Roy Burson of Red Rock, California have been denied mail delivery to their home by the United States Postal Service (USPS) due to the dangerous road leading up to their residence. The couple, who are both on disability, rely on mail delivery for medication and other necessities.
For years, UPS, Waste Management, FED EX, DHL, and USPS have delivered mail to the Burson home, despite the bumpy road leading up to it. However, last year, the USPS told drivers not to attempt delivery if they felt the road was too dangerous. In April of this year, the Bursons received a letter stating they needed to install a mailbox at the end of their road, use a delivery box unit, or pick up their mail 33 miles away at the North Hills Boulevard Post Office.
Hilary Burson attempted to gather more information by visiting the post office, but was met with conflicting information from a supervisor named “Monica.” The couple’s disabilities are documented by their doctors, and building a mailbox down their road would be a financial and physical challenge. Additionally, Hilary asked if their mail could be delivered to a neighbor, but was told this would be illegal without being provided with a specific statute or regulation.
The Bursons have reached out to the USPS for a solution to their mailing malady, but have not yet received a response.
