Step 2, Governor Lombardo Can Stop Truancy and Fill Classrooms

Part 9:

My daughter Sarah’s friends skip school all the time, and nothing happens. I’m livid. I drag myself out of bed at 5 a.m. to get my kids to class, but half their peers don’t show, and Nevada’s schools just shrug. We have laws that say truants can face court, and parents can be fined. Governor Lombardo can lead the charge to enforce them statewide. My blood’s boiling thinking of Sarah trying to learn in a room where half the desks are empty, but I see hope in his reforms.

In some schools, 30 to 60% of kids skip daily. In Lyon County, nearly four out of ten students are chronically absent. This isn’t just a few bad apples, it’s a system needing strong guidance. Lombardo’s Accountability Act already expands school choice, he can build on that by pushing districts to crack down on truancy, like successful programs in Texas. I love my kids too much to let Nevada raise a generation that thinks ditching school is fine. I’m anxious about what happens if this continues, kids who can’t hold a job because they never learned discipline.

There’s hope if Lombardo champions enforcement, filling those classrooms and giving kids a chance to learn. I’m laying out the final steps he can drive next, because he’s the leader to save our schools.

Stay tuned, in Part 10, I detail Steps 3 and 4: how Governor Lombardo can kick out violence and drugs to finally save our schools.
