After the Uvalde Shooting, Las Vegas Valley Teachers Fear for Their Safety

LAS VEGAS – After the shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas, a teacher in the Las Vegas Valley now wears a bulletproof vest to school every day out of fear for their student’s safety.

The teacher said that after completing the required active shooter training over the summer, they still feel unprepared for a potential threat. The school enrolls roughly a thousand kids.

This experience “made me realize how hazardous being in the classroom or at a school is and how easy it is for anybody to hurt these kids or personnel at schools,” the educator said.

The educator is worried that intruders can quickly enter the facility, hide from any visible security officers, and then breach the lobby to attack classrooms. The school works with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Southern Nevada Counterterrorism Center to provide training, enhance security, and reduce potential threats.

The educator informs the students that they are not alone in carrying a protective vest to school. We’re all terrified of it, they added, and I’ve spoken to several teachers who are considering it or have already done it. It was put upon them that “if someone were to come into the classroom, I would be the brave one, the one protecting the children at all costs.”

For the welfare of the pupils and the staff, the teacher hopes that the administration will invest in more security, armed protection, and infrastructure.
