An Arizona man is dead after going on a hike in Grand Canyon National Park on Thursday.
According to the National Park Service, 65-year-old James Handschy, from Oracle, Arizona, was found unresponsive on the Bright Angel Trail about 1.5 miles north of the Havasupai Gardens. Rangers received an emergency alert from a personal locator beacon and arrived at the scene by helicopter. However, Handschy had died.
National Park Service officials said they have launched an investigation and are working with the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No further details about the incident have been released.
Hiking in the Grand Canyon can be dangerous, especially in the summer months when temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Hikers should always be prepared with plenty of water, food, and sunscreen. They should also be aware of their surroundings and watch out for falling rocks and other hazards.
