LAS VEGAS – Dr. Jerry Hu, a sleep dentist in the valley, is not only a proud father of three boys but also an advocate for autism awareness in minority communities. Dr. Hu, who himself belongs to a minority group, understands the challenges of raising a child on the autism spectrum, especially in the absence of adequate education, resources, and treatment options.
A recent CDC report reveals that 1 in 36 children in the United States has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and for the first time, the percentage of Asian, black, and Hispanic children diagnosed was higher than among white children. Dinisha Mingo, a qualified mental health associate and director of Mingo Health Solutions, emphasizes that autism education is the first step in addressing this disparity.
Mingo points out that the lack of understanding of the behaviors exhibited by children on the autism spectrum often leads to misinterpretation as disobedience, aggression, or drama, particularly among people of color, who tend to receive the diagnosis later in life. Early intervention is crucial in managing autism, but Mingo highlights the barriers faced by some families due to the cost of diagnosis and limited availability of providers, especially minority providers, who can offer a sense of safety and trust.
Dr. Hu, on the other hand, shares that managing his son’s autism has become easier with proper healthcare, nutrition, and sleep routine. His son is now involved in activities like gymnastics, school, and sleepovers, and Dr. Hu attributes this success to early intervention, including malfunction therapy and expanding his son’s airway.
Mingo Health Solutions, where Dinisha Mingo works, offers free online autism support groups and parent training groups, as well as in-clinic and in-home services. They strive to provide culturally sensitive and competent care, understanding the unique challenges faced by families from diverse backgrounds. In addition, they offer referrals to trusted doctors and resources such as the autism assistance program, although long wait lists may be a challenge.
Dr. Hu and Mingo Health Solutions are determined to create a positive impact and drive healthcare and societal change for minority communities in terms of autism awareness and access to early intervention and treatment options. They emphasize the importance of education, resources, and culturally competent care in addressing the disparities faced by minority families dealing with autism. Overall, they are committed to supporting families in their journey to provide the best care for their children on the autism spectrum. So that every child, regardless of their background, can have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
