Las Vegas, NV – The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees is set to reconsider the resignation of Superintendent Jesus Jara during their February 22nd meeting. If approved, Jara’s last day on the job would be the following day.
The board will vote on a proposal offering Jara a $250,000 lump sum buyout for his immediate resignation. This is significantly less than the $500,000 initially sought by Jara in a severance package rejected by the board on February 7th.
In a statement, CCSD board president Evelyn Garcia-Morales indicated that the resignation is a “mutual agreement” timed to coincide with an upcoming revision of the district’s five-year strategic plan.
Controversies, Criticism, and Reactions
Jara’s resignation comes amidst controversies including a recent report citing low student proficiency rates and ongoing salary disputes with the Clark County Education Association (CCEA), the union representing district teachers.
The CCEA released a statement calling for Jara to resign “without a golden parachute” and expressing strong opposition to the potential appointment of Deputy Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell as a permanent replacement.
Next Steps
The February 22nd meeting will also include the appointment of an interim superintendent. While a final decision has not been made, a nationwide search for a permanent superintendent remains a possibility.
