Clark County Education Association Appeals Ruling on Teacher “Sickouts”

LAS VEGAS – The Clark County Education Association (CCEA) has filed an appeal following a recent injunction that categorized the recent series of teacher “sickouts” as a “strike.”

Clark County Judge Crystal Eller ruled on Wednesday that there was “overwhelming and substantial evidence” supporting the classification of the mass teacher absences as an illegal strike in Nevada, leading to the injunction.

In response, CCEA Executive Director John Vellardita announced plans to appeal directly to the Supreme Court, emphasizing that the core issue revolves around teacher concerns and treatment within the schools.

No hearing dates have been scheduled for the appeal. The ongoing staff shortages in the district have forced eight school closures or class combinations since September 1, with Ulis Newton Elementary School being the latest affected.

The union maintains its denial of involvement in the teacher absences.
