LAS VEGAS – On Thursday morning, a group of people from various organizations, communities, and backgrounds gathered on the Regional Justice Center’s sunny steps in Las Vegas.

They held signs with the message “Stop Asian hate” and rallied against Asian hate in response to the recent attack on a local Filipino-American named Amadeo Quindara.

Mr. Quindara was assaulted in his garage on May 30 by his neighbor, who punched him multiple times, slammed him on the ground, and caused a brain hematoma, bruises and a gash to his head.

The neighbor, Christian Lentz, was charged with residential burglary and is also facing charges of elder abuse and residential burglary perpetrated as hate crimes.

News of Quindara’s attack spread throughout the community, and many people and organizations came out to support him and his family.

Gloria Caoile, the founding vice chair of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations, led the rally and called for action from lawmakers and law enforcement to stop anti-Asian hate and hate crimes overall.

Minddie Lloyd, co-founder and president of Bamboo Bridges, called for civil rights protections for the AAPI community to be strengthened.

Assemblyman Duy Nguyen, D-Las Vegas, who attended the rally, plans to meet with stakeholders from the community to draft legislation addressing hate crimes directly.
