Confirmed Tuberculosis Case Discovered at Southwest Las Vegas Elementary School

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – The school disclosed on Tuesday that a student at a southwest Las Vegas valley primary school had been identified as having active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

The principal of Helen Jydstrup Elementary School Christina Miani informed parents, guardians, and educators in a letter that starting on Thursday, the Southern Nevada Health District will test kids and teachers in certain classrooms.

A bacterial disease called tuberculosis may be passed from person to person by prolonged, intimate contact and inhaling the same air. The letter said that touching or handling items does not spread tuberculosis.

The Southern Nevada Health District and the school are collaborating to establish a method for testing anyone who had direct contact with the suspect.
