LAS VEGAS – Thousands of dedicated Culinary Union workers took to the streets of the Las Vegas Strip on Thursday, engaging in a spirited picket as contract negotiations continue with some of the largest resorts in the entertainment capital of the world.
Union members expressed concerns about potential reductions in working hours, which would ultimately lead to a decrease in their pay. Jose Mesa Torres, a passionate union member, voiced his belief that resort operators should “share” their profits, acknowledging the significant contributions made by the workers.
“We have played a vital role in building this city, and we deserve to thrive within it,” stated Bethany Khan, a spokesperson for the Culinary Union, emphasizing the importance of securing a fair and beneficial contract for all members.
In September, the Culinary Union conducted a vote, authorizing a potential strike if an agreement cannot be reached. MGM Resorts International, in response to the vote, reaffirmed its commitment to negotiating a contract that benefits both parties, citing a long history of successful bargaining with the union.
More recently, representatives from MGM, Wynn Resorts, and Caesars Entertainment engaged in negotiations with the Culinary Union. However, an agreement has yet to be reached, prolonging the uncertainty for the union workers.
In the coming months, Las Vegas is set to welcome a multitude of visitors as it hosts the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix and Super Bowl LVIII. As the city gears up for these major events, the Culinary Union’s rally serves as a reminder of the ongoing negotiations and the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement for all parties involved.
