LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – A plan that would increase the state’s demand for expenditure by insurance carriers has the support of dentists in Nevada.
According to the Nevada Dental Association, state Sen. Heidi Seevers Gansert has introduced an insurance reform measure that will increase the threshold for expenditure on patient care.
The measure requires dental insurance firms to spend at least 80% of the money they earn from consumers on dental treatment.
According to the Dental Association, this adjustment would equal Nevada’s current threshold for medical care spending.
“Dental patients deserve the same consumer protections as medical patients,” Seevers Gansert said in a statement. “Empowering our Division of Insurance to ensure premiums are being spent on dental care in the proper ratio to improve outcomes will help Nevadans live healthier and happier lives.”
The law would force insurance firms to produce financial documents that detail how patient premiums are spent. If such corporations do not achieve the 80% threshold, they must reimburse the difference to patients.
The insurance commissioner of Nevada would also approve proposed rates for dental insurance plans, and the state Division of Insurance would publish a list of insurance businesses that are in and out of compliance.
Supporters claim the law was inspired by a ballot issue with identical language that Massachusetts voters decisively approved last month.
Nevada’s next legislative session begins on February 6, 2019.
