LAS VEGAS – Travelers flying in and out of Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas are experiencing delays due to a scheduled maintenance project on one of the airport’s runways. According to airport officials, the north-south runway has been closed for maintenance work that is expected to last for a total of 30-45 days.
Christine Crews, the spokesperson for the airport, explained that the maintenance work is essential to ensure the airport is ready to handle the increasing air traffic coming into the valley. With a record number of passengers in 2022 and some major events on the horizon, the airport wants to make sure that its operations are as safe as possible.
The closure of the north-south runway has caused air traffic controllers to switch to different runways when the winds kick up, resulting in a ground delay on Monday. Crews said that traffic coming from another airport is impacted the most, with delays and sitting on the ground in Las Vegas leading to a lack of available space for incoming planes.
The airport has assured passengers that it is doing everything possible to minimize the impact of the maintenance work on flight schedules. Crews added that the work on the north-south runway is about three weeks into the scheduled 30-day period, and once completed, similar work will begin on the parallel north-south runway.
Travelers are advised to check their flight status with their airlines and plan accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
