LAS VEGAS – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is asking people to help people in need by volunteering or giving blood.
More than 300,000 Red Cross volunteers help their communities by responding to thousands of disasters, helping to collect blood so that patients can get the care they need, helping military members and their families, and helping communities around the world get ready for emergencies.
Rachel Flanigan, the Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada, said, “We are proud to take part in the National Day of Service and pay tribute to Dr. King’s lasting impact on our country.” “This day reminds us that as Red Cross volunteers, we have the power to make a difference in the lives of others and help our community in times of crisis.”
Flanigan said that last year, Red Cross volunteers in Southern Nevada helped more than 350 families who had to leave their homes because of fires. They also set up more than 1,100 free smoke alarms and helped 517 blood drives collect more than 10,000 units of blood.
Flanigan said, “We want people in our community to carry on Dr. King’s work by volunteering with us throughout the year.” “Service can bring people together, build bridges, and heal divisions. Service brings people together, regardless of race, religion, or zip code.
Last year, more than 650 people in Southern Nevada gave more than 28,000 hours of their time to help their community.
Flanigan said, “Today, we encourage people to volunteer for the Red Cross and answer Dr. King’s call to serve and make a difference in the lives of people in our community.”
