LAS VEGAS – In a heartwarming tribute to an act of incredible heroism, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman presented Arturo Castrejon with the Key to the City during Wednesday’s council meeting. Castrejon’s unwavering courage and quick thinking had saved the life of an elderly homeless man who was swept away by floodwaters during last weekend’s deluge in the valley.
Mayor Goodman commended Castrejon, declaring, “You are a remarkable example of what we strive to be.”
The heroic incident unfolded when Castrejon and a friend were driving in the northeast valley, near Bonanza and Pecos, on September 2nd. It was there that they witnessed the elderly man being carried away on a flooded street by the relentless currents.
Without hesitation, Castrejon leaped into action, putting his own life at risk to rescue the stranded individual. He recalled, “A lot of people, they don’t do this, because they see the guy as floating on the water. I didn’t think twice, jumped, and put my life at risk. I think a lot of people should do the same thing that I did.”
What makes this act even more remarkable is that Castrejon admitted to not knowing how to swim. Despite this, he successfully saved the elderly man, displaying exceptional bravery and selflessness.
Reflecting on his heroic act, Castrejon shared, “I feel really good inside, feel like I am a hero now, feel like I can help more people, if I can, you know.”
As of now, the condition and whereabouts of the elderly man remain unknown. Nonetheless, Arturo Castrejon’s inspiring actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on another’s life during a time of dire need.
