A man in his 50s is dead after a bystander intervention in a suspected sexual assault incident in the east Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson, witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming and rushed to her aid. “A group of citizens who overheard the female screaming ran to her aid,” Johansson stated. “That’s when he was stabbed.”
Responding officers arrived at the scene on the 1000 block of Laurel Avenue, just south of East Charleston Blvd., around 3:30 pm and found the wounded man in a back alley. He received medical treatment on-site before being transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported to police that the man may have been committing a sexual assault when the bystanders intervened, leading to the stabbing. The alleged victim, a woman in her 30s, further stated to police that the assault occurred in a shed located behind a nearby dirt lot.
The group of bystanders fled the scene after the confrontation, while the man retreated to the alley where he was later found by police.
Detectives are actively investigating the incident, including reviewing surveillance footage in the area to identify the bystanders involved.
“This is still a pretty fluid investigation,” Johansson said. He appealed to the public for any information regarding the incident, urging them to contact Metro’s Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers of Nevada.
