A Las Vegas traffic collision on Wednesday night resulted in the tragic deaths of two pedestrians and injuries to several others.
Deadly Crash on Boulder Highway
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) reported that the crash occurred around 7:37 PM on Boulder Highway, south of Dalhart Street. A northbound 2014 KIA Rio, traveling at a high speed, struck several pedestrians waiting at a nearby bus stop shelter.
Vehicle Leaves Roadway, Causing Catastrophe
The investigation revealed that the KIA veered off the roadway, hitting several fixed objects before colliding with the bus shelter. The impact of the crash sent pedestrians flying into the street.
Victims Transported and Identified
Three pedestrians were rushed to UMC Trauma Center by ambulance. One victim sustained life-threatening injuries, while two others suffered serious injuries. Sadly, two additional pedestrians, a 42-year-old man and a 14-year-old teenager, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Impaired Driver Suspected
The driver of the KIA, identified as 64-year-old Cynthia Phelps, exhibited signs of impairment following the crash. She was arrested on DUI-related charges and received treatment for minor injuries.
Solemn Reminder of Traffic Safety
The LVMPD noted in a press release that this incident marked the 49th and 50th traffic-related fatalities within their jurisdiction for 2024. The LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section is actively investigating the cause of the crash.
