LAS VEGAS – According to District Court records, Alonzo “AJ” Brown, the Las Vegas man accused in the deaths of three men, has been deemed incompetent to stand trial. Brown, who was 19 years old at the time, maintained his innocence during a jailhouse interview. He is no longer in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.
The victims, Paul Viana, Josue Chaparro-Montalvo, and Tevin Alhashemi, were all shot to death. While Viana and Chaparro-Montalvo lived near Brown, their homicides were considered random. Brown had a prior altercation with Alhashemi.
In late June, District Judge Christy Craig ruled that Brown was unfit to stand trial after a mental competency hearing. He was subsequently transferred to Lake’s Crossing Center, a maximum security psychiatric facility.
Police have connected DNA evidence to Brown, and during his arrest, officers found guns and a ski mask matching surveillance footage. However, Brown did not deny owning the guns. Evidence at two of the crime scenes is linked to one of Brown’s firearms.
The ruling of incompetence to stand trial means that Brown’s ability to understand the charges against him and participate in his defense is impaired. The case remains ongoing as authorities work to address Brown’s mental health issues.
