LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas taxicab companies have proposed the implementation of a “special event surcharge,” similar to surge pricing used by ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. This request has come to light as the Taxicab Authority approved new taxicab rates, marking the first comprehensive increase since 2015. While the date of implementation for the new rates is yet to be announced, customers can expect a 50% increase in the initial meter charge, rising from $3.50 to $5.25, as well as an additional 20 cents per mile. “Zone rates” will also see an increase of $2.00.
Previously, the per-mile rate was calculated in increments of 1/12 of a mile, but the proposed rates have now shifted to 1/8 of a mile. The old rate amounted to $2.76 per mile, while the new rate will be $2.96 per mile, resulting in an additional 20 cents per mile for passengers.
The approval of the new rates took place on Monday, although the commencement date is yet to be determined. The rate request was filed on behalf of several taxicab companies, including Henderson Taxi, Whittlesea Blue Cab, Nevada Yellow Cab, Nevada Checker Cab, Nevada Star Cab, New Cab Co., Virgin Valley, and Desert Cab. These rates will be applicable in Clark County.
The request for a “special event surcharge” is still in the early stages and may be discussed at a future meeting of the Taxicab Authority. The board will need to review the definition of a special event and consider factors such as peak demand hours, such as the early morning period from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., as well as the “deadhead” trip to pick up travelers at event sites. The objective of this surcharge is to encourage drivers to work during peak events and cater to the needs of the traveling public.
Refining the charges associated with special events may require a rate workshop to ensure fairness and transparency.
The taxicab industry in Las Vegas has faced increasing competition from rideshare services and emerging transportation options like the Las Vegas Loop, which currently operates within the Las Vegas Convention Center area and Resorts World. Inflation, rising fuel prices, and wages have also added pressure to taxicab companies.
