Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has called on President Donald Trump to remove tariffs on lithium imports, emphasizing the critical role of Nevada’s lithium resources in bolstering U.S. energy independence and economic strength.
In a letter addressed to the President, Governor Lombardo highlighted that Nevada is home to North America’s largest known lithium deposits, positioning the state at the forefront of the nation’s energy transformation. He expressed concern that the current tariffs on lithium are hindering the growth of this vital industry, which is essential for manufacturing batteries used in electric vehicles and other technologies.
“Developing this vital resource will not only complement existing energy sources but also play a key role in advancing our shared goal of achieving U.S. energy independence,” Lombardo stated in his letter. He further noted that the lack of domestic technology capable of refining lithium to manufacturing standards necessitates reliance on imports, primarily from China, making the tariffs particularly burdensome for U.S. companies.
The Governor warned that these tariffs could render American companies uncompetitive in the global market, potentially leading to job losses and economic setbacks. He urged the administration to consider the long-term benefits of supporting domestic lithium production and processing, which would not only secure American jobs but also strengthen the nation’s position in the global energy sector.
