Lundy Elementary’s Fate Remains Uncertain: School Board Takes No Action

The future of Lundy Elementary, Mount Charleston’s sole school, remains unclear after the Clark County School District Board of Trustees failed to decide on its closure Thursday evening.

The Board considered the CCSD’s recommendation to close the storm-damaged school. However, a motion to approve the closure failed to pass, and an earlier motion to reject the closure recommendation also did not receive enough votes.

Financial Concerns vs. Community Need

The CCSD cited the high cost of repairs – estimated at $6 million – as the primary reason for closure. They claim that while insurance provided $1.5 million, significant “excluded costs” remain a financial hurdle.

Community Rallies for Lundy Elementary

However, parents and residents of Mount Charleston voiced strong opposition to the closure. They argued that Lundy Elementary serves a vital role in the community and highlighted the challenges students would face with long bus rides to alternate schools.

Next Steps: Awaiting a Decision

With no clear resolution, the fate of Lundy Elementary hangs in the balance. The next CCSD board meeting is scheduled for July 11th, where the issue may be revisited.

Parents and residents are left waiting anxiously to see if their efforts to keep their local school open will prevail.
